A story of how a model 1 sega saturn kicked my ass...

Post by NWA »

hi all,

i just thought i'd tell a story of a model 1 sega saturn i purchased as is at a game store. i got home and the spindle motor was loose and dead. but i didnt want to declare it dead so i contined to work on it. after 7 hours of work, the spindle spun once.... then a puff of smoke came out of the ribbon cable underneath the laser..... so my first instict was to unplug the system. being an idiot, i didnt turn off the power switch and just went to rip out the plug.... and as quick as that 120 volts went through me!. sadly the saturn was never repaired and remains under my bed... the end

I electrocuted myself while working on a broken CRT TV back in high school... some of the components in there contain charges in the tens of thousands of volts. I'm not sure how much discharged through my hand... but it was quite a jolt. I let out a yell just as the Audio/Visual specialist at the school walked through the door. After that I decided to heed the "no user-serviceable parts inside" warning and called it a lost cause.
I have my Saturns, I have some of my games, I have a RasPi. Gotta put all this stuff together!

I don't actually remember any pain - just the surprise. Then afterwards, the weird numbness of recovery time. The shock mostly just went through my finger, so I had two white spots where my finger bridged points on the main board. If it did hurt, I've long since forgotten. Now the time I burned myself with a soldering iron... THAT one I remember.
